The Daily Coin Flip Week of 1/20/13 Instructions:
Ask yourself the question. If you want, flip a coin. “On Edge” means that the
coin lands and balances on its edge. Sunday Should
I say “eww” or “gross” in response to what I see? Heads Eww. Tails Gross. On
Edge It wouldn’t be so bad to look
at if it didn’t appear 144 times. Monday Am
I a horrible person? Heads Yes. I never floss. Tails No. I floss regularly. On
Edge I can’t be sure. I have a
nonjudgmental dental hygienist. Tuesday Do
the results of this
study, showing that people who had happy childhoods earn more money,
imply that we should improve the situations of children to promote
prosperity? Heads Yes. Tails No. Making the happiness of
children more likely is good in itself. On
Edge Maybe the people who were less
than deliriously happy as children found better things to do with their lives
than accumulate large amounts of money. Wednesday Should
tradition inform contemporary art? Heads Yes. Tails No. On
Edge I’ve created a role-playing computer
game in which the player’s avatar can be a thimble, a wheelbarrow, or a top
hat. Thursday Given
how long we’ve known the shape of the Earth, is it
time to stop referring to “the four corners of the world”? Heads Yes. Language should be rational. Tails No. Whimsy and contradiction are
important components of language. On
Edge What worries me is how
unimaginative the phrase makes ancient cosmology seem. What would be a more
interesting shape than a quadrilateral for the world if it were flat? Please
post your answers here.
Interestingly, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_continents
discusses a relatively recent origin for the phrase, though it appears in
some translations of the Bible and of the titles of Cyrus the Great (http://www.iranchamber.com/history/cyrus/cyrus_charter.php).
Friday Is
there privacy in heaven? Heads Yes. Tails No. On
Edge If you want me to leave the
room, just say so. Saturday What
is the moral of this week’s coin flips? Heads Life is not a game of Monopoly. Tails Parts of Hindu cosmology are not
far from some current ideas on the subject. On
Edge Dr. Watson never had fine
clothing. He wore homespun. Due
to my heavy schedule, The Daily Coin Flip will update irregularly, possibly
rarely, until late May. When there’s a new update, I’ll post on Facebook. Thanks for reading. The Daily Coin Flip on Facebook |
